Time to throw away your Nalgene bottles?

A recent report on MSNBC indicates that plastic bottles/containers may pose health risks. How do you know if your bottle or container is safe? Turn it over and look at the number inside the little triangle. The number will be between 1 and 7. The numbers that pose the most risk are 3, 6 and 7. The risk is due to exposure to a chemical called Bisphenal A which affects hormones and therefore fertility and reproduction. Nalgene plans to phase out bottles containing this chemical over the next several months. What are the alternatives? Klean Kanteen makes a stainless steel water bottle that is available from REI. I know there are a couple of models available from the People's Food Coop in Ann Arbor - sorry I don't remember the brand names.

If you already have a Nalgene water bottle and don't want it to end up in a landfill you can find some tips here to minimize the dangers posed by Bisphenal A.

More good information can be found on National Geographics Green Guide.

The SIGG bottles looks pretty great. Metal and ultra lightweight. Anyone know of a way to hook them to your hand, though?

I think it is the SIGG bottles that they sell at People's Market. I'll double check next time I am in the store.

Nate - the ultimate direction bottles that I use are a # 4 so at least they aren't listed among the most dangerous. I'm going to keep using them for running.

For my commute and to carry around town I think I'll get one of the stainless steel bottles.

I just looked at your blog and I'll be running many of the same races as you this year. No Keewenaw (sp?) for me this year but I'll be at all of the other ones - although Vasa is questionable if I go to the Grand Canyon for a R2R run (maybe R2R2R if I can convince the rest of the group).
